I could be wrong, but I don't think that's what she's talking about.  I have seen her issue in the past.  Many have complained about it.  The nostrils are lit, like the nose doesn't block any light at all.  I was pretty sure this probelm was solved, at least in DS.  I don't know if it was solved in Poser.  I think it was gone after the V4 family of figures, but I'm not sure.

You are quite correct Dana, it was a known poser issue for a long time, (why some older textures have black dots where the nostrils are.), but it was fixed I believe or a fix was found in Poser 2012 I think. I cant recall now the details of both how it could be avoided or what the fix for it was, I know the implication of SSS in poser did help as did adding the superfly render engine but there was a way to prevent it in firefly and with non SSS skins. A google search for "fix glowing poser nostrils" or something like that might turn up an answer but unfortunately a lot of things like that were in the RDNA forums that are now long gone :(

Okay did this one using the straight La Femme same spot light and rendered at 200 resolution and no glow!

The is something called SubSurface Scattering (SSS) in DAZ Studio and in Poser. It is something that is done to skin textures which when it is on, lets light pass through and scatter in thin areas of the body, like nostrils, earlobes, and thin parts of the hand. If you hold your spreaded out hand up toward the Sun, or a fairly bright light, and look at the hand, you can see the effect in real life; mostly in the webbing between the fingers and thumb, and in the finger and thumb tips. SSS simulates this effect, but it isn't perfect. Sometimes you get too much light. The quality of the textures must be high for it to be convincing, and there are lots of texture sets that are not good quality for such things. In DAZ Studio you can either turn the SSS off or on, or you can load version of a texture set that includes SSS. If you are using the best texture sets you have on your figures, it is quite likely that they have SSS, and it is on by default. I think it is also something that Poser has as well. Yes there are textures for even the Millennium 3 figures that have SSS. Victoria 3, Michael 3, Aiko 3, The Girl, Stephanie Petite, The Freak 3, Hiro 3, David 3, all have certain textures that have SSS.

The reason I'm telling you this is because what you are seeing just might be due to that type of texture sets. I think most of the best textures for human figures have SSS. To see if that is what you are seeing you'll need to look at the parameters for your figure's surfaces in Poser. I know how to do that in DAZ Studio, but not yet in Poser.

humm... thanks for explaining SSS... I understand it better now.  But still not convinced it's an SSS issue.. I'll play some more this week.  I'll keep everyone posted... It's baffling for sure.

Interesting.. so it's not just me.  I'll have to play some more... I've tried G2f and I get the same issue... I'll have to find a better skin for her to see if that's the problem.  hummmm

Pooh... darn... and I suck at searching too... lol.  I may just have to give up my 'realistic' wants with Poser.  But I've been told that my artwork isn't "realistic" enough on some book covers I was making... so I stopped making them cause they wouldn't get approved... I was hoping Iray would give me better renders... I have yet to try making more book covers.  :(  We shall see if I can get up enough courage to make more for 24!  lol

That's getting closer Sanbie... She's gorgeous and you know I'm not a La Femme fan.  Bumping the resolution?  I'd not tried that.  Gonna give that a test also this week.  Thank you!

I am sorry to derail this thread but we ARE getting some great portraits (thanks to Sanbie)... Thank you all for your help.  I clearly need more practice with Poser!

I don't consider this as derailing the thread. Discussions are quite welcome here. We are a group of artists that are good at helping each other, and that is one of the things these threads are for. If we need to get into a serious thread concerning instructions and tutorials, we can always create one for that purpose. Still when we are discussing problems like the one you are having Llola, this thread is perhaps the best one for that discussion. It lets all of us participate to find a way to solve a problem. This site is about that kind of help, so don't feel bad about sparking a discussion of this type. I welcome it, and I'm sure the rest of us do also. Besides, a lot of info is being posted that helps more that one person, myself included; and that is always a plus!
