Oh Simon... WHERE on earth did kitty find a goldfish in a long hallway?  I thought it was a mouse!  lol.

All my pictures of my cats have red glowing eyes when the flash goes off... Kinda hard NOT to get glowing eyes.  It has to do with the shape of their eyes I think... lol

People have red pupils when photographed, too, when looking directly at a camera with mounted flash.  It's the retina, bouncing back the light.  I think I've seen a different color with some cats, though.

When I shoot a photo of my cats, I don't get that eye glow, even if they are looking at the camera. The reason that glow happens is because of the camera flash. My cameras have the option to use the flash or not. In decently lit environments the camera flash is not necessary, especially with the new digital cameras.
I have an old 35m Minolta camera that requires film, that must then be developed, but I've not used it in almost 20 years. My Professional Sony digital camera and my smartphone camera are my go to cameras now. The smartphone has four different camera lenses on the back of it and one one the front. I can choose which one I want to use, but I don't know the specific uses of each lens. Still even though it's a phone camera, it shoots really high resolution images, and videos. My Sony Professional camera has a zoom feature that can pull a far subject into a close up looking shot or video. Yes it can shoot videos too.

With a proper lighting setup, redeye can be totally avoided.  With a flash on camera, it's almost guaranteed.  The closer the flash is to the lens, the more intense it will be.  With a smartphone camera, the flash is less than an inch away from the lens, so if you use it, you guarantee redeye.  However, as Agent said, most modern phones can shoot in pretty low light, and don't need to use the flash.

By the way, you can get the same effect shooting a spider with macro lens setting if you use the flash.  But...it won't be red.  I've found it to be blue, at least the ones I've shot.
