Nice to see everyone adding wonderful artworks here.  Sorry I've been a little lax lately with the rendering.  Hope to get into it more next month.... Blahhhh February... and now we have a funeral to go to tomorrow so I'll be afk for a few days.  Keep up the awesome works Sanbie... Saph... Agent... Erika... etc.. etc... Zhanara & the Fire Lizard


One of my favorite authors is Anne McCaffrey, who wrote or co-wrote several novels in a series she created named Dragonriders of Pern. In the series it is eventually revealed that the way the Dragons were brought into being was through a breeding program involving an indigeonous species of the planet Pern known as Fire Lizards. It was the settlers from Earth that had colonized Pern that had learned a very harsh lesson concerning the approach of a red planet that became known as the Red Star. When it came close to Pern, it could be seen during the day; however, that was not the entire problem with that other planet. As soon as it drew close to Pern, a phenomenon occurred called Threadfall; a deadly type of life that was very corrosive to life on Pern. The effect of the Threadfall was the devastation it caused the colonists, as their crops were destroyed, and many of the colonists and their Pern-born offspring were lost during the Threadfall.
So it became neccessary to find a way to combat the Threadfall. That first Threadfall period nearly destroyed their entire society. During that time, the Fire Lizards demonstrated some special abilities, such as a knowledge of what was coming, and a desire to keep their human friends safe. The little creatures tried to herd the humans into places the thread could not reach, and they chewed a special sulfur based rock, that then allowed them to breath fire, which they used to burn thread. Their pitifull efforts were inadequate to destroy enough thread to save what humans had established on Pern, and it also caused their technology to be mostly forgotten, by killing many of the people who had the knowledge to build and operate many advanced technological devices. Thus their social system became compromised as well.
It soon became a neccessity to find some way to fight the thread, and the best way to do that was to burn it before it could do damage to crops, animals, and people. One colonist who was a xenobiologist got the idea to start a breeding program that was designed to increase the size of the Fire Lizards. They knew that the 'Red Star' would be returning periodically , and it would continue to do a lot of damage whenever it did. So they worked out the highly elliptical orbit of the 'Red Star' in order to know when it would return. The breeding program was implemented, and it not only increased the size of the Fire Lizards, but also their intelligence. As the Fire Lizards also had some empathic or telepathic abilities, the newly bred species gained the ability to communicate telepathically with each other and with the humans that were imprinted upon them. After a few decades, the new species had increased to a size that would allow humans to ride them; and so the Dragonriders came into existence. The new species was called Dragons, and they were fiercely loyal to their own riders. Once a rider pass away, it would not be long until his Dragon passed as well; such was the strength of the bond between them.
Oh yeah! There was another ability that became quite useful that the Dragons had. They could go into the Between; an extradimensional realm that allowed almost instant travel to wherever they were needed on Pern, when Threadfall was in progress. They were also able to take their riders with them.
Special equipment was developed to help fight Threadfall that was carried by the Dragonriders and supporting personnel on the ground, which they could use to burn Thread. Flying in the skies of Pern, the Dragons and their riders would burn as much Thread as they could before it reached the ground. The supporting personnel on the ground would burn as much of the Thread that reached the ground as they could, to minimize the damage done. It was not a perfect system of fighting the problems, but it was effective enough to keep the colony from collapsing into oblivion.
I know! I am providing a lot of spoilers for those who wish to read the Dragonriders of Pern series, but there is quite a lot more I have not revealed. Besides, I never got to do a Series Report in school, so consider this my Series Report on the Dragonriders of Pern series. I do highly recommend the series for those of you that like Science Fiction and/or Science Fantasy. The series was Anne McCaffrey's most prolific, as she wrote a lot of novels set in that universe, and had help from other authors, as well as two of her own family members. The result was 26 books in all, and every one in my opinion are excellent stories! So if you want to learn more, find those books and read them! It is a well written series, indeed!

By the way, the woman is a character I made that just lives on Pern. She is, to my knowledge, not a character in any of the books of the series. I just needed a female human character to use with the little Fire Lizard. The Fire Lizard is a fantasy creature available at the DAZ Store for DAZ Studio and Poser. Its name is Piccolo.

Oh Agent... Thank you for reminding me I have a few of the Dragonrider books!  I don't know the whole story... I remember reading a few of Anne's books a looooooooong time ago... Before I was married I read a lot of sci-fi.  Don't read much anymore so I didn't know the whole story of the series.  Thanks for the synopsis.  Gonna have to look into reading them again.  :)
